Missouri? Progressive bicycle legislation - story from Missouri Bicycle Federation

News organizations across the state are writing about a new law, set to take effect Friday, August 28th, that will allow bicyclists and motorcyclists to proceed through a red light that won't change for them. Motorcycle advocacy groups proposed the law because motorcyclists often have the same problem bicyclists have--too many traffic signals just don't detect them. Unless a car comes along to trigger the light to change, you can sit literally forever waiting. MoBikeFed then worked to have bicyclists included in the law as well, since they face the same problem even more often than motorcyclists. Every sensible bicyclist or motorcyclist in that situation will wait until it is clear the light is not going to change, then wait until it is safe to proceed, and then go. And now, thanks to this new law, you can do that without fear of getting a ticket for running a red light. It is thanks to your ongoing support of MoBikeFed that common-sense changes like this are taking p

City puts bicyclists directly in the path of motorists - USA Today

Image
In one of the busiest shopping districts in  Long Beach, Calif ., bicyclists are kings of the road in an experiment that turns frustrated motorists into serfs. The seaside city south of Los Angeles is encouraging bikers to get right in front of cars. It painted a five-foot wide green stripe down the middle of one of the two lanes in either direction of the Belmont Shore section of the city. Even though cars were whizzing by at 30 miles an hour yesterday, bikes were free to ride right in their path. more...

Biking 150 miles for a cause -- in a dress and heels (CNN)

Image
(CNN)  -- Amidst the sea of jerseys and bike shorts at New Jersey's City to Shore -- a 150-mile bike ride to benefit multiple sclerosis research -- one unlikely rider stands out. A tiny 84-year-old woman wears a neat, green turtleneck dress and an embroidered jacket. On her feet is a pair of high-heeled pumps. Her salt-and-pepper hair peeks out from the helmet that indicates she is, in fact, a participant in the bike ride. Her old-fashioned one-speed bicycle is purple, with a large wire basket on the front that carries her belongings and her number for the ride. more...

Bikeracker - Portland, Oregon

Image
Proudly serving the Portland, Oregon metro area, we deliver, setup, breakdown, and remove our proprietary, secure parking racks for self-service use during an event. We cater to both small and large events, especially those that can't justify the logistics of a bike valet corral. The core benefit to our racks and service is to be able to locate parking as close to the center of activity, allowing for quick transition from parking to event without searching for a corral or empty rack. Additionally, our racks can be a great supplement to corrals, and gives event participants the flexibility to come and go as desired. the site...

Cielo Cycles - Buy a handmade bike by Chris King

Image
READYMADE CLASSICS Cielo Cycles is unique in its approach to handmade bicycle fabrication. We offer readymade classics in stock sizes with little to no lead time. Our framesets are priced to compete with the larger manufacturers' boxed bikes but with details and construction that rival custom one-at-a-time handmade framesets. We pride ourselves on a meticulous approach to frame construction; there is no dependance on "black magic" here. For example, our build team miters tubes to .002 of an inch assuring razor straight alignment from the very moment the tubes are joined. There is no simple expression of "craft" that supplants precision, no "artisanship" that takes precedence over intention. Sure, our bikes have soul and we are not corporate robots but we do believe in repeatable high-quality work. We plan to offer our road and cyclocross models on a permanent basis with other seasonal models mixed in on limited terms. Our color options will be ca

Amazing German Bike-Carrying Train - WIRED GADGET LAB

Image
Bikes and trains are a great mix. A train can get you out into the coutryside for some downhill runs, or let you cycle at a destination too far to get to by bike in a day, saving a car trip. Our own velvet-voiced editor Dylan Tweney throws his taxi-yellow, easy to carry fixed-gear on the commuter train from time to time, and I would travel along with my non-biking friends in Berlin on the bike-friendly U-bahn. But while San Francisco and Berlin both allow bikes (although I hear the new muni cars have less bike spaces than the old ones), neither is as impressive as the the Stuttgart to Degerloch  Zahnradbahn  in Germany. The open bike-car has taken bike-commuters along this short two kilometer (one and a quarter mile) stretch since 1983. Two kilometers? Are these people lazy? Our German speaking readers will have noticed what is going on here:  Zahnradbahn  is a cog-driven railway, and this train climbs 200 meters (almost 2,200 yards) from station to station, a climb that is guarant

Dawes Arboretum Ride and Walk

I rode with Bethia and Katie from my house out through the countryside to Dawes Arboretum. Total mileage was 29 miles. Brisk with a slight wind out the north. Great ride. My wife joined us at Dawes for a walk through the trees and gardens. We left and stopped at Clark's Dining Room which has been rated as having the best fried chicken in Ohio, but they were packed and we couldn't wait. I have eaten there and the chicken is good. Unfortunately the restaurant will be closing after 91 years on November 1. : (

Stop Means Stop How do we get bikers to obey traffic laws? By Christopher Beam Posted Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at 12:44 PM ET PRINT DISCUSS E-MAIL RSS RECOMMEND... SINGLE PAGE Heading home from work yesterday, I ran five red lights and three stop signs, went the wrong way down a one-way street, and took a left across two lanes of oncoming traffic. My excuse: I was on a bike. I'm far from the only menace on two wheels. A colleague was recently slapped with a moving violation after breezing through a stop sign. My roommate was pulled over 30 feet from our house for the same infraction. And driving around Washington, D.C., recently, I saw a cop scribbling out a ticket to a bewildered biker. more...
