Parks & Trails New York

Parks & Trails New York is New York’s leading statewide advocate for parks and trails, dedicated since 1985 to improving our health, economy, and quality of life through the use and enjoyment of green space.

Parks & Trails New York has worked with hundreds of community organizations and municipalities to envision, create, promote, and protect a growing network of parks and more than 1,500 miles of greenways, bike paths, and trails throughout New York State.
Our current priorities include:
  • Save Our State (SOS) Parks Campaign – organizing and advocacy on behalf of the 57 million people who vote with their feet by visiting New York’s state parks each year.  PTNY fights park closings and advocates for improved maintenance and stewardship of our magnificent but neglected state park system.
  • Community trails support – helping communities realize their dream of a local trail to enjoy exercise and nature, close to home.
  • Promoting bicycling for sustainable tourism and economic development – PTNY’s annual bike tours along the Erie Canal and through the Hudson Valley highlight the natural and historic wonders available to bicyclists of every age and ability.
  • Strengthening New York’s grassroots park and trail movements – PTNY is providing extensive technical assistance and targeted capacity-building grants to local groups from Niagara to Montauk.
  • Promoting the historic and beautiful Erie Canalway Trail across upstate New York and working to Close the Gaps in the Trail so that all 348 Trail miles are available for public enjoyment.
  • New York State Trails Coalition – PTNY speaks out on behalf of local trail organizations and advocates for the creation and protection of a statewide trail network, linking New York’s communities and natural resources.
