VIEWS FROM THE 'BUS RESPONDS TO BICYCLE HATRED AIMED AT BIKE BLOGS

Seems like every time I post a bicycle related post there are a few angry, f-bomb filled replies and/or rebloggs on my blog, Views From The 'bus , located on Tumbr. Hate is more often an adjective used to vent these folks frustrations with the two wheeled peddler. It's what I like to call “off road rage” and it's a little creepy. Especially when these people are maneuvering a half ton of steel at a much higher velocity than I can propel my bike. Yet, we as riders are the villains to many of this nations “car culture” . Interestingly enough I have not seen the same venom spewed towards pedestrians and their jay walking or automobiles and their speeding, illegal U-turns, driving down one way streets the wrong way or non-signaling ways. I have heard drivers state ” bicycles do not belong on the road”, then where I ask? The sidewalks? Bicycles are illegal on sidewalks in most states, are considered motored vehicles in 48 states and are supposed to be ridden in the street. A...

Columbus Bike Polo and Megan Leigh Photography Mash Up

Image
So, last Tuesday night 6 Columbus Bike Polo members and 1 drenched photographer, braved the stormy weather and the result was a mixture of challenging matches and unique images. A special thank you to Megan Leigh for enduring the less than ideal elements and donating her talents. The six valiant polo players and their steeds. "All for one, One for all!" Peter Brown with ball control. The wet court added some pretty cool reflections. Myself and David Frankhouser Fletch on the breakaway with Peter Josh Direen on the wall Columbus Bike Polo meets every Tuesday night @9p.m. @the courts on Lane Ave & High St. across from the UDF and next to Taylor Tower. Everyone welcome!! Thursdays @830p.m. is beginners night. Hope to see ya out there!!

Who is the fastest rider in Columbus? Lets find out, shall we?!

Tuesday Night Ride Recap - 11/03/09

We had twelve riders for the Tuesday Night Ride! We rode north and headed over on 5th. Up Cleveland and then we headed through the fairgrounds to Silver Drive up to North Broadway. We made it over to Ferris and then to Cleveland. At Morse we stopped for food at Taquikin . Then we headed west and north through the Tamarack roundabout. We crossed the pedestrian bridge over 71 and then headed south on Indianola. We headed down Walhalla to High and the group started to break up. 22 miles. Many tacos consumed.

Columbus to London (and back) in one day...

Image
London, Ohio of course. After I posted the information about the trailhead for the Prairie Grass Trail, I decided to investigate myself. I started at High and Broad and rode straight out to West Jefferson. Once in West Jefferson look for "bike route" signs. The route heads south and turns at Wilson Road and ultimately ends at the trailhead. It took me exactly 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the trail. The Prairie Grass Trailhead has parking and bathroom facilities. It is paved and marked with mileage which is a nice touch. Typical fare for Ohio trails, a combination of cornfields and residential areas with a couple of road crossings. From downtown to London is roughly 27 miles. I stopped and sat at the trailhead on the way back through. Then headed north back to Broad and back to town. No incidents with autos except for an errant honk. Saw two other bikers out riding near West Jefferson. I thought that I had never been in West Jefferson, but realized that the Ride the Darby ri...

Montana Watch - Day 2

Image
Still waiting for the elusive visit from a member of the biking community in Montana. Anywhere in Montana would be good. Hawaii had 2 visits. Even Alaska has some visits - 9 total this past month. Go figure. And I didn't even have any Palin material on my site.

11/10/08 Ride Report

Cold and clear. It was moony out. Very bright. 33 degrees to start. We had about 20 people, including Casey at the start. Evan wanted to lead so we headed south. For some reason, whether by choice (some went to bike polo), or just missing the fact that people left the launch pad we lost half the group before the turn at 12th? We crossed Summit and 4th and went south to 5th. We then proceeded due east as far as possible to Hamilton. Left onto Hamilton and then left onto Sawyer. Sawyer is a connector road that takes you to the airport terminal from the east. It also is a rollercoaster ride underneath the runway connectors. We stopped to debate if we should ride through the terminal, nixed it and headed west. We turned onto E 17th street (although that may not be the name now with the road realignment) and popped out on Johnstown and then onto Cassady. Cassady to Airport. Airport down to Nelson. We rode Broad up to Franklin Park and rode into the park and out onto Fair. We popped out on O...

The announcement we have all been waiting for....

Folks, the ride you've been anticipating for almost a year is.... still two months away. Yet, you wouldn't believe the number of people hounding me about the announcement for this ride. (would you believe ... one?.... well, why not?) 8th Annual HATTARICK - Hockhocking Adena Trail To Athens Ride In the Cold for Koffee Saturday, January 3, 2009 Hockhocking Adena RailTrail from Nelsonville, OH (Hocking Technical College) to Athens, OH.....and back. Friends, this is the only ride in Ohio that's downhill in both directions. You have to ride it to truly appreciate it's nuisances. (IF you are 80+ years old, the 'and back' portion of the ride may be waived) Day Before Ride: Reminder to xxxxxxxxx to come up with a better excuse than last year's for not riding. (Better = more creative) Last year's excuses were pretty lame. Person with "Best Excuse" will receive a pair of SmartWool cycling socks. Winner must be present to win. ...
