Torch is a new brand that focuses on lit apparel for the urban rider and skater who's not afraid to have fun after dark. The T1 helmet, our first product, is unique as it draws attention to the rider at night by elevating the light signature above city traffic. In addition to our primary goal of safety, we focused on creating a helmet with a clean, iconic style geared towards urban riders. To achieve this we started with a classic silhouette and kept the details simple. The helmet will be produced using an in-mold technique with a thin polycarbonate shell and an expanded polystyrene body. This method creates a very light, yet strong helmet. Torch will also include an adjustable system for a more accurate fit, making the helmet safer and more comfortable. The helmet features front and rear lenses which the LEDs project onto. This projection method is important as it disperses the light across the lens. This creates increased visibility and brighter light...

We were big fans of the theft-resistant Defender bike light, by Gotham Bicycle Defense Industries , when we saw it on Kickstarter. (So was everyone else; it surpassed its $18,000 fundraising target in about a day.) Now, company founders Slava Menn and Brad Geswein are starting work on their next product, and they want the GOOD community to help guide the process, weighing in on everything from design to name in hopes of creating an excellent crowdsourced product. We'll be posting occasional updates on the GOOD site. Below, Slava explains the challenge: "Why did you come to America?" the reporter asked Dmitri, standing outside the immigration office in Boston’s Logan airport on a clear and cold February morning in 1981. Holding his 6-month-old son, Dmitri, who had fled the Soviet Union, cleared his throat and answered with the largest word in his English vocabulary, "opportunity." The baby in his arms was me. Michael Loke, Flickr Every six seconds, someone is killed or seriously injured in a traffic accident. Every day, 3,500 people are killed in car crashes. That means traffic fatalities are a global epidemic on par with malaria and tuberculosis, according to a new report issued by the Campaign for Global Road Safety. "The epidemic has reached crisis proportions," wrote Kevin Watkins, a Brookings Institute researcher who authored the report , and the problem is "set to worse over the years ahead." dcist.com A police officer tickets cyclists traveling against traffic along the one-way New Hampshire Avenue in Washington, DC, in the summer of 2008. By Mia Birk Riding home not long ago, I spotted a police officer videotaping bicyclists at a large and lovely traffic circle on one of Portland’s most popular bikeways in Ladd’s Addition, one of its oldest residential neighborhoods. More than 4,000 cyclists a day circumnavigate the roundabout, which features a park in the middle and is the salient feature of this historic neighborhood. A couple times a year, cranky neighbors complain about cyclists rolling the stop signs. The police usually respond by handing out a couple dozen $242 tickets and then go back to ignoring it. Very productive. Once again, someone had complained, and the officer was there to document the situation. Sure cyclists don’t come to a complete stop at this or most stop-controlled intersections. Most motorists don’t come to a complete s...

A tourer? Commuter? Monster ‘cross? Dress it up whichever way you like, the Peregrine is our most flexible frameset, with a classic lugged construction. The Peregrine harks back to some of the classic all-rounder bikes of old. Sturdy enough to hit the dirt, nimble enough for some singletrack, stable enough for touring – the Peregrine will do what you want to do, take you where you want to go. There’s enough clearance for 2.0” wide 29” tyres for true off-roading, or a nice fat 700x37 (even with mudguards) for touring, around town, or a bit of rough-stuffing. Full braze-ons for racks and mudguards mean you’re set for some long touring as well. The frame is designed to give you sharp yet predictable handling. Long stays and a low bottom bracket mean stability even with a load. However we don’t believe ‘stable’ needs to mean it handles like a cumbersome old truck. Unloaded, you can still rip along your local trails or even enter a local ‘cross race or two should the mood take you. A ...

Perfect for DIYers who want to build a bike in the comfort of their own homes, and at their own pace. Our kits come with the materials, tools, and instructions needed to walk you through our bike-making process. Our kits are also popular in schools, and are used to teach high school and middle school students how to build a bike of their own. Our kit relies on the same process that we use in our workshops. Using our kit you’ll begin your bike by setting up your bike-making jig and tacking your bamboo tubes into place. Once completed, you’ll shape the lugs where your bamboo tubes meet. You’ll then wrap your tubes together fibers and resin, and let the bike sit till the epoxy hardens. You’ll then remove your frame from the jig, and file down your lugs to a smooth finish. After applying a final coat, you can install your components (purchased separately), or take your frame to your nearest bikeshop and have your components installed for you. While kit-building times vary, we’ve foun...

I am selling my Vista Carrera 7 road bike. Perfect for the aspiring culture creator. I have recently become a Successful Entrepreneur and I no longer have the need for such trifling possessions. I drive a gigantic cargo van that literally pisses gas onto the road to mark its territory. Do you want to be noticed? Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Sleeve tattoo didn't do the trick? Dubstep bounce remix didn't go viral? Look no further than this bike. Don't even look past it in the pictures posted below. Import it into Photoshop and delete the background. I know you know how to do it, because you're a graphic designer. Orange body. Green accents. Pink handlebar wrap. Some silver. Black. Dirt. Are there even any more colors? There are awesome reflective stickers on the bike, too, which makes darting out in front of automobiles on dark evenings and asserting one's absolute and total right of way even more self-righteously awesome. Dear motorist: Did you not see ...

You don’t have to look far to spot a cyclist these days, especially with urban cycling up 36% in the 70 largest US cities over the past five years (League of American Cyclists). Yet, for all the shared passion of being on two wheels, cyclists are an incredibly diverse bunch, represented by tribes as different as the bikes they ride. In Bike Tribes: A Field Guide to North American Cyclists (Roda le Books; Publication date: May 22; Paperback; $18.99; 224 pages and 60 illustrations throughout; ISBN: 978-1-60961-743-1; also available as an e-book), author Mike Magnuson offers a hilarious and essential field guide that breaks down the various tribes of the cycling community: from the spandex-clad weekend warriors to the hipsters on street bikes who love to laugh at each other (and themselves). A life-long rider who has written extensively about cycling, Mike Magnuson takes us into the insular world of the cycling community, poking fun at pretenses and offering an up-close look at ev...

Toronto's tough-talking mayor has never hidden his disdain for cyclists. Now they are accusing him of trumping up a war on two-wheeled commuters. Bike lanes have been removed but are the city's streets any more dangerous to ride? Rob Ford cruised to victory as city mayor a year-and-a-half ago pledging to end what he dubbed "the war on the car". He argued that bike lanes were taking away space for cars. "And what I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks. Sooner or later you're going to get bitten," said Ford speaking in 2010 as a Toronto city council-member. "And every year we have dozens of people that get hit by cars or trucks. Well, no wonder: roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes. "My heart bleeds for them when I hear someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day." Since Ford came into office, Toronto hasn't just stopped putting in bike lanes; it has...

Banking behemoth Citigroup announced today it’s funneling $41 million into the city’s ambitious bike share program, paving the way for the two-wheeled invasion to begin in as early as July. Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the Citigroup branded bikes — in the company’s trademark blue hue and plastered with the new “Citi Bikes” logo —at City Hall. The financial company’s sponsorship allows the city to operate the program at no expense to taxpayers. “The new Citi Bikes will be an affordable, entirely new, 24/7 transportation network that will help New Yorkers get where they are going faster,” he said. DAN BRINZAC The new Citi Bikes are debuted at City Hall today. The bike share program, when complete by spring 2013, will be the largest in the country, with 10,000 bikes and 600 stations scattered across Manhattan and Brooklyn. The exact locations of the solar-powered bike stations will be revealed later this week, but officials have said many will be near mass transit hubs. Department of Transpo...

The starting line!( Courtesy TD Five Boro Bike Tour ) The organizers of the Five Boro Bike Tour appear to have delivered on their promise to work out some of the kinks that marred the massive group bike ride last year. It seems yesterday's the sublime weather and improved organization greatly reduced the consternation that erupted from last year's tour, which forced thousands of participants to a standstill in massive bike traffic jams repeatedly throughout the day. Bearded messengers, fixed-gear freestylers, laid-back contraption captains … Eben Weiss, the razor-sharp blogger behind Bike Snob NYC, offers a merciless velo-taxonomy of two-wheeled clans Eben Weiss, aka Bike Snob NYC, photographed for the Observer in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Photograph: Neil Wilder for the Observer The world of cycling is like a big bowl of Lucky Charms cereal – it's full of goofy-looking figures in different colours and shapes, but they all come together to be delicious. Furthermore, different people partake in the world of cycling in different ways. Some like to pick out the marshmallows one at a time, others like the crunchy stuff and still others like to let the bowl sit there for an hour so they can eat the whole thing in one soggy mass. If you're new to cycling, you might find this bewildering array of people confusing and intimidating, and as such you might be reluctant to dig in. However, while any unfamiliar group of people seems aloof an...
