Bike Lady Update April 2012

Dear Friends of the Bike Lady:

The Jefferson Awards are a recognition system honoring community and public service and are presented on two levels: national and local. Co-created by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard, they began in 1972. The local Jefferson Awards are sponsored by Nationwide Insurance, WBNS10TV andThisWeek community newspapers. This year, there were 195 nominations, 20 finalists and five award recipients selected by a local panel. Then, the national Jefferson Awards organization chose one of the five to participate join 149 others from across our great land the national ceremony.

It is with great honor that I will represent the Friends of the Bike Lady and all of central Ohio at the national Jefferson Awards ceremony in Washington, DC this June. I am so astounded to have this privilege.

Friends of the Bike Lady, YOU make it possible to do what I do. Without your belief in the power of a bicycle to positively change a young life, and your support in so many generous ways, Bike Lady couldn’t roll each year. YOU create those shiny, two-wheeled holiday miracles. The Jefferson Award recognition belongs to YOU!

The award luncheon was yesterday at the Columbus Museum of Art. It was an awesome and super-inspirational program highlighting the projects of all 20 nominees. Words fail to describe how humbled I feel to be among them. Highlights of yesterday’s program will be broadcast on 10TV, Saturday, April 28 at 7:00pm. Set the DVR and grab the tissues for some seriously feel-good television.

In other news…

  • It’s time to take off the training wheels. I have five super-talented individuals joining the Bike Lady board of a directors and a wonderful attorney has agreed to provide Bike Lady, Inc. legal consultation as needed. I’m still looking for an accountant familiar with nonprofit regulations to join the effort. Pass the word.

  • A.J. Frank created a professional video about the Bike Lady “backstory”. It’s now on the website homepage. Thank you AJ!

  • Tax receipts were sent via email in February. As tax day approaches, let me know if you need a duplicate or hardcopy.

  • I want to try something new for Bike Lady 2012 to get more bike for the buck: Raise the majority of funds by September 1, order unassembled bikes at greatly reduced cost direct from Huffy, have time for them to arrive via rail and hold an assembly event after Thanksgiving. Funds that come in after September 1 can be used for helmets and locks and to purchase additional bikes retail. To make this happen, I need to find donated warehouse space for delivery and assembly. We’d only need the space November and early December. Contact me if you know of a possible location.

  • Follow Bike Lady Inc. on Facebook for more news, faster.

Thank you for rolling with the Bike Lady all the way to America’s capital! You all ROCK!

Sincerely,
