Plans move ahead to build ramp to connect Towpath Trail with Veterans Viaduct [indeonline]

The final obstacle to the completion of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Massillon will be eliminated with the addition of a 14-foot wide pedestrian/bicycle ramp that will connect trail users with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Viaduct.
The ramp, which could cost an estimated $942,000 to design and build, would allow trail users to bypass a set of railroad tracks that cross the Tuscarawas River levee just south of the viaduct. The tracks are maintained by the Norfolk & Southern Railroad and are considered private property.
Stark County Park District Director Bob Fonte said officials reached an agreement on how to solve the problem last week during a meeting with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials in Huntington, W.Va. Dozens of alternatives have been considered during the last 10 years, according to Fonte.
“We hope we can finalize the design this year and go out for bid,” Fonte said.
