Bike Lady - Franklin County Holiday Wish program

A year ago, I asked you to join me in donating bicycles to the Franklin County Holiday Wish program to benefit foster children at Christmas. Your generosity was overwhelming and together we put 125 local foster children safely on bikes with helmet and lock included. On behalf of those 125 kids and their foster families, thank you. Your donation of nearly $15,000 in cash, bikes and gear was amazing and truly demonstrated the spirit of Christmas.
Most of the 2008 bikes went to children in Kinship Care. These are foster kids typically being cared for by relatives. Kinship Care families receive no financial subsidy to offset the cost of raising these children and the caretakers are often seriously struggling to make ends meet. The bikes you gave were truly dreams come true and could not have been acquired any other way. I had the pleasure of meeting many such grandmas and the tears of joy and gratitude emphasized the necessity to make the Bike Lady Holiday Bike-A-Thon an annual event.
I have officially incorporated as a nonprofit, Bike Lady, Inc. There is a website, www.bikelady.org. We even have a post office box! I am personally underwriting ALL administrative costs so 100% of donations will go towards bikes, helmets and locks.
So, bikes are back in 2009! I believe we can match our 2008 efforts. Dare I hope that we might even exceed last year's generosity? I ask each of you to help the Bike Lady and kick off the holiday season by making a foster child's dream come true. Deadline December 14.
  • Donate online at www.bikelady.org
  • Mail a check payable to Bike Lady, Inc. and mail to PO Box 311, Blacklick, OH 43004
  • Or select and purchase a bike, helmet and lock, then drop them off at FCCS Holiday Wish Santa's Workshop at 855 West Mound Street, M-F, 8-5. Contact me to assist in the delivery if needed

And, please, SPREAD THE WORD. At a minimum, send your friends, relatives and co-workers to www.bikelady.org with your endorsement that it's a legitimate and worthwhile appeal. Perhaps they will also recognize how something as simple as a bicycle will help a few neglected and abused children feel so very special. All their lives, they will remember 2009 as the year they got their first bike.
Once again, could you be a friend of the Bike Lady and give a kid a bike?
Sincerely,
Kate Gatch
