September 24 Ride Report

We only rode about 15 miles into the southwest area of Columbus. Our only stop was at a cemetery, which was closed and very quiet. 98% full moon and in the 70's.

Greetings from San Jose, California. Roaming gnome?!

Beer sampler. What to drink? This is not a bus stop! Why is the room spinning? Where am I? San Jose?

Columbus Fall Challenge

Columbus Fall Challenge September 29-30, 2007 http://www.outdoor-pursuits.org/biking/cfc.htm There will be no more updates to this article. Most unknowns about Columbus Fall Challenge are resolved. CFC will start at Berne Union Schools in Sugar Grove and end at the Betsy Mills in Marietta. Breakfast will be served at the Marietta Middle School. Located on Seventh St. by the YMCA. The routes are finalized. Expect a hillier route than the past several years. For a detail of the ride see ride detail. The Saturday route should be around 112 miles, the Sunday route around 103 miles. The course profile is by Delorme Topo which overstates the actual climbing so reduce the numbers by say 10%. Registering Late Try to get your applications in such that they arrive no later than Thursday September 27th. If you have doubts about your application arriving by Thursday ...

Ride Report September 17

Image
We headed northeast of campus and rode around until we ended up in some small park that had a little pond with a wooden bridge over it. (Still trying to figure out what park it is) Duncan rammed into a concrete parking block, but he and bike were OK. I left a roaming gnome at the park on one of the barier poles. We rode south and did a loop up to Walhalla. I waited for the stragglers and we lost the group. A few of us crossed above Valhalla while the main group was heading down it. We totally lost the group when we got back out to High Street. So we rode down High Street. Mike peeled off near Italian Village and we continued to the High Beck. We beat the group to the bar. No trouble finding a seat and no lines for the pizza. They had lost a lot of people by the time they arrived at 12:45. Matt had a birthday cake waiting for him so we all had cake. I guess the group rode to the southwest side of town near COSI and the cops pulled them over because they were concerned for their s...

Takes Two to Tandem Ride Report

This ride was a benefit for the ACB-Ohio first Annual Building Blocks for a Brighter Future. It centered around the Kokosing Gap Trail . We rode the trail for about 5 miles to Gambier before we headed south on a variety of roads including Big Run, Beckholt and Grove Church. In Martinsburg we headed east on Divan which was had a few climbs and rollers. We turned north on 32 and stayed on it until it crossed 62. We rode Millwood into Howard for lunch at the trail. We had sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks. Ice cream was part of the deal, but no one was interested. It may have been the temperature. We then headed back to the starting point, Phillips Park, by way of the trail. It is paved, clear of debris, but had a lot of traffic. It crosses the river, passes through corn fields and ends/starts right at the parking facility in Mt. Vernon. Since this was the first year there are some aspects of the ride that Mary can improve on in year two. I think the matching of riders for the tandem...

Lancaster Ride Report

I asked and I received. I sent out an email to ask if anyone was riding on Saturday, and Barb answered by leading the ride from Canal Winchester to Lancaster. It was 46 when I first woke up, and it dropped two degrees before I headed out the door. By the time we started at 8:30AM it was 48 degrees. Four riders, including me braved the cold. We wound our way toward the southeast by winding our way through the backroads. We passed through Amanda. They were having their annual town fair which blocked Main Street. We stopped at a gas station for a snack. The highlight of the ride south was Revenge Road, which has a mile long climb (max 13%) that passed a prison at the peak. We turned down Blue Valley which headed down off the hill toward 33. We crossed 33 into Sugar Grove and were passed by several fire trucks (more on that later). We followed Sugar Road all the way into Lancaster. We were at 43 miles and had only stopped once in Amanda. Lunch stop was at the Four Reasons Deli and ...

September 10 Ride Report

There were about 50 people. We had a bugle solo during stops. A taco rim after an encounter with a pothole. The resurfacing of North High in the Short North area caused a mishap when one of the riders hit a pile of chewed up ashpalt. She went down in slow motion from my vantage point. Other than that it was uneventful. We rode around southeastern Columbus and ended up in German Village, where we bewildered locals by riding the paths inside Shiller Park several times. Then, it was the sprint to High Beck Tavern. We rode 17 miles, a little shorter than normal.

Millersport Corn Festival Ride Report

Saturday September 1 My friend Kevin came over from Pittsburgh to ride. The route was announced as 50 miles but it ended up being 45. We started at the Bloom Carroll High School in Carroll Ohio and headed east on Carroll Eastern Road. We then turned north and stair stepped through the cornfields. After we emerged from the fields Buckeye Lake appeared on the horizon. We rode the southern shore past houses and a park and ended up at the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival (www.sweetcornfest.com). As we were pulling up to the festival the bell started to ring announcing that the corn was ready. They do it right at Millersport. They have an automatic husking machine that spits out gobs of corn. After a few pieces of corn and a sandwich we headed back to the high school back through the cornfields. Beautiful weather. Great people. Good food. It always amazes me the people you meet on a ride. Kevin kept up with a faster group and when I caught up to him I was introduced to Andrew. Kevin started ...
