Pittsburgh BikeFest

Image
What is BikeFest? BikeFest is Pittsburgh’s biggest cycling event for cyclists by cyclists. It’s BikePGH’s annual celebration of bicycling, showcasing Pittsburgh in all of its uniqueness and beauty. It is not an organized event, but a framework for volunteers and organizations to organize bicycle-themed events. Whether you ride everyday, the weekends, or just always wanted to try, BikeFest has an event for you! Pittsburgh is filled with interesting things to see and do, and there is no better way to experience the city than on a bicycle. So we decided to celebrate the two to both raise awareness of the bike as a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to get around, and to highlight some of the amazing things Pittsburgh has to offer. There are a wide variety of bikers and organizations in this city and if we can all get to know one another, we’ll be able to make Pittsburgh a more bike friendly and livable city. the site...

What Pelotonia aspires to be - The Dispatch

Nothing about the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is small. Not the signature route of the enduring bicycle tour: 192 miles from Sturbridge to Cape Cod. Not the number of riders who participate: 5,000 this year (from 36 states and eight countries) and 59,000 since 1980. And certainly not the money the bike-athon has contributed toward making the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston a world leader in the fight against the disease: $270 mil- lion in 30 years. "The PMC has made what we do at Dana-Farber possible," said Dr. Edward J. Benz Jr., president of the 62-year-old cancer-research center and hospital. Which is why the PMC is what central Ohio's budding Pelotonia Tour wants to be when it grows up. more...

London Cycling Campaign

Image
Our five-year strategy Our strategy 2008-13 LCC's latest five-year strategy document, entitled One in Five by 2025, covers the period 2008-2013. It outlines specific activities and targets in pursuit of our vision. You can download the full strategy and a summary of this document on the right. The list of objectives below form the core of LCC's strategic direction for the next five years: Promote cycling to the people Many people are slow to realise the benefits of cycling, so we must skilfully make them see them. Redesign our streets for cycles Our streets and neighbourhoods need to be redesigned to be more cycle-friendly. Promote cycling to our politicians We must promote the facts, that cycling is cheap and provides a solution to five great public policy concerns for London. Make cycling diverse and inclusive Equality and inclusion are two key LCC values, and are central to our plan to make London a cycling city. the site...

David Byrne Bicycle Diaries

Image
Since the early 1980s, David has been riding a bike as his principal means of transportation in New York City. Two decades ago, he discovered folding bikes and started taking them with him when travelling around the world. DB's choice was initially made out of convenience rather than political motivation, but the more cities he saw from his bicycle, the more he became hooked on this mode of transport and the sense of liberation, exhilaration, and connection it provided. This point of view, from his bike seat, became his panoramic window on urban life, a magical way of opening one’s eyes to the inner workings and rhythms of a city’s geography and population. more...

Too many wheels on the bus - The Dispatch

Orphaned bikes piling up in COTA garage might go to charity Monday, August 3, 2009 3:07 AM BY JOHN FUTTY THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SHARI LEWIS | DISPATCH Nearly 100 bicycles are in COTA's bus garage after being left on bus racks. In five years, fewer than 100 have been claimed out of 400 left behind. Since COTA started putting bicycle racks on the front of all its buses nearly five years ago, hundreds of people have left their bikes behind after riding the bus. Some are nice enough that one would expect the owners to come looking for them. When they don't, the Central Ohio Transit Authority is left wondering what to do: trash them, sell them or give them away? "This is a problem for us," President Bill Lhota said recently as he surveyed nearly 100 bicycles hanging on or leaning against a wall in the bus garage at COTA's headquarters. Some are old and battered, but others are new and well-maintained. Ed Sowinski, a transportation supervisor for COTA, estimated that 40...

Everyone Bikes (or should) - Bike Share Program is here in Columbus

Image
EveryoneBIKES.org is an experiment designed to help communities create bike shares through retailer and advertiser partnerships. Our retailers provide the bikes to riders via a simple transaction. Riders can take a bike, run errands, visit the various retailers throughout our neighborhood, stop and enjoy food/drink/shopping and return the bike for others to enjoy. Super. Simple. Our pilot here in the Short North community of Columbus, OH will evolve over time but our goal today is to prove that communities can provide a safe, cost-effective transportation alternative cooperative to communities. Eventually, we'd like to move beyond the Short North and have communities throughout the US adopt our idea. Want to do a bike-share in your community? Take our idea and make it yours. And keep us posted on how things work out. the site is here... sign up to get your bike on!
