Saturday and Sunday September 26 & 27, Start 7-8:30AM CFC is a challenging ride, for the rider who likes steep climbs, swift descents, and breathtaking (if you even have any left) views from the hills of Southeastern Ohio. It is a strenuous, two-day ride that covers over 200 miles, starting and ending at Berne Union School in Sugar Grove. The YMCA in Marietta will be the overnight stop this year. Registration packets, available for pickup from 7-8:30AM will contain: 1) wristband and 2) detailed route map. Ciaran Meyers from the University of Leeds Institute for Transport Studies used a bicycle equipped with a device that measures the distance of passing vehicles. I decided to venture out into the threatening skies to ride with Brett. We did the 52 mile route for Ridge Runner. It is well marked and a 80 and 100 mile route also exists. It started raining about ten miles in and lasted until we made it to Granville for a coffee and ice cream break. Then we had a tailwind until the finish line. I continued south back to my house and ended with 64 miles. Averaged 15.6mph. Climbed about 2100 feet. Great weather, even with the rain.

Studio 35 was the start/finish for the "Night of a Thousand Tacos" ride. We had about 30 riders, and two scooters for escort. I want to thank the scooter riders because they helped shepherd us through some high traffic areas with ease. This was a cruise style ride, so we didn't have any high speed riding or people trying to show off by riding out front. The route took us north on Indianola, then over Cooke and Ferris to Cleveland. We stopped at 4 trucks along the route. All the trucks were great for staying open late and providing special deals for the cyclists. But, I must say that Taco Nazo went all out for us. Free drinks, free cake and 65 cent tacos. We topped it off with a cold Modelo. Don Pedros, the final truck had a little slower service than the first three. It is located out in front of Garden Inn so we ventured in to use the facilities and have a mas(s) tequila shot (or whiskey). The song from True Blood was playing on the jukebox which I thought was fun...

Speak up for Trails, Walking and Biking Now On Tuesday, September 15, Senators John McCain (Ariz.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.) issued two amendments to the FY10 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.  If passed, these amendments would eliminate the majority of available federal funds for trails, walking and bicycling. Amendment 2370 would prohibit the use of federal funds for pedestrian or bicycle facilities, efforts to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife, or other specified Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects if the Highway Trust Fund cannot cover unfunded highway authorizations.  Amendment 2371 would allow states to eliminate spending on TE, the nation’s largest funding source for trails, walking and bicycling. Congress currently sets aside a portion of federal funds for TE to support these projects in all states.
