Most of us know that cycling with headphones in is a big no-no, but we might make an exception with innovation from  AfterShokz .  The basic idea is that, because the headphones don't sit inside your ears, you're still able to pick up the noise going on in your surroundings.  The bud that normally goes inside your ear sits on your cheekbones and uses 'bone conduction' technology. AfterShokz say that, unlike conventional headphones that use your eardrums as transmitters, their product delivers sound through your cheekbones to your inner ears.  The headphones were apparently developed for use by military and SWAT teams, allowing people to hear both electronic communications from members of their unit and movements by their targets at the same time. Tskaka Cooke (courtesy Jean Segarra) Last week  a bill that would give police officers unambiguous authority  to penalize drivers who injure pedestrians or cyclists did not pass the state legislature. But even if the bill had been signed into law it would have failed to cover drivers who carelessly open their car doors, as was the case when 39-year-old cyclist Tskaka Cooke was  killed last Saturday  after striking a car door that was suddenly opened in his path on a busy road in Queens. "You can open a door and injure a pedestrian or cyclist and not trigger the law," attorney  Steve Vaccaro  says. "You can door someone and run and it's not a crime." Currently a motorist faces a $150 fine for violating New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1214 [ pdf ], which prohibits opening a door "of a motor vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so."   by Nick Beres MURFREESBORO,  Tenn.  - Police have released graphic video of a hit-and-run incident from Saturday morning that left a 22-year-old cyclist fighting for his life. They hope it helps lead to an arrest. "This is extremely crucial," said Major Clyde Adkison with the Murfreesboro Police Department. Detectives hope someone recognizes the gold SUV and provides helpful information. The hit-and-run happened at the intersection of south Rutherford and Mercury Boulevard.  The video from red light cameras shows the SUV plowing into the back of the bicycle. This is my route to the Winter Park Farmers Market. It’s almost entirely residential streets, connected by the Mead Garden Trail. It’s not a route on which I would expect to be aggressively intimidated. It was a typical ride in which I exchanged friendly greetings with several people, both on foot and in cars. Thin and fit, McKibben mostly rides the gravel roads around his home in Vermont, which is good for his health and the well-being of Vermont motorists. On June 16, 2012, over a thousand well-trained riders gathered at the  Harpoon Brewery  in Boston for Harpoon's annual  Harpoon Brewery to Brewery  ride: a 148-mile ride from Boston, MA to Windsor, VT.  Ibex , a longtime connoisseur of Harpoon beer, has been a proud sponsor of the B2B for the past four years. This year, we followed three cyclists as they prepared for the ride. Any way you look at it, the number is daunting. As a point of comparison, the longest stage of the  2012 Tour de France  will be 140-miles (220-Km). Photo: Ariel Zambelich/Wired Near the top of Olde Stage Road near my home of Boulder, Colorado, there’s a pair of handpainted signs that read “Lickety-Split” and “Lovely Deer.” Olde Stage is a favorite hillclimb among local cyclists; linked to Lee Hill Road via Lefthand Canyon, it makes up one of the area’s best short, hard rides. The signs, which have been there for as long as I can remember, are a lament. Maybe we could slow down a little, it asks. But in cars or on bikes, we don’t.But it’s not without danger, as the signs suggest. Once you reach the top of the hill, you’ve got to come down. Among the hazards: some sharp corners; weather; gravel and debris; the many commuters — possessed of a wide range of driving ability and cordiality to cyclists — who drive from their foothills homes to Boulder for work or errands; and, of course, the aforementioned deer. News out of the conference committee working on the federal transportation bill isn’t good. While Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Rep. John Mica (R-FL) yesterday announced that “the conferees have moved forward toward a bipartisan, bicameral agreement on a highway reauthorization bill,” we’re hearing that important programs that fund biking and walking are in urgent peril. To shine the spotlight on the critical importance of federal dollars in making our street safe for all users,  Transportation for America has released new data  showing the tremendous death toll of streets designed for cars alone: 50,000 preventable pedestrian deaths between 2001 and 2010. That’s the question ReasonTV  posed  yesterday, and it’s a good one to think about. By most metrics, D.C.’s bikeshare system, Capital Bikeshare, is something to celebrate. Four thousand people use it every day. In its first year it exceeded projections for membership, revenue and number of riders. It’s great to see a new transit option become so popular. The problem is, it’s mostly popular with white people who have money to spend (though, for the record, the survey found that, while few poor people use the system, the average rider is slightly  less  affluent than your average Washingtonian).
